# Margin Check

> A pricing agent that answers what a deal does to margin, and who has to approve it. Copy it, ask it from your terminal or your coding agent, put your own pricing in it, and run it from your own code.

This guide takes you from nothing to a pricing agent of your own. Margin Check holds a company's price list, costs, discount policy and current contracts, and answers two questions about any deal: what it does to gross margin, and who has to approve it. You can ask it from your terminal, or from your coding agent while you work on the code that builds quotes, with nothing to attach.

Orca is where it runs. Tokens cost [OpenRouter's price plus their fee](https://orcapods.ai/pricing), with no markup from us, and the harness underneath is built to spend fewer of them. A sandbox starts only when a session needs one (Margin Check doesn't), a model call that hits a hiccup is retried for you, and every session shows exactly what it cost.

Each step below builds on the one before, and you can stop after any of them.

## What it knows

* **A made-up company's pricing.** Larkspur Analytics sells dashboards per seat on three plans, Starter, Team and Enterprise, with add-ons, premium support and an onboarding package. Margin Check holds its prices, its cost to serve each item, nine discount rules numbered R1 to R9, and seven current contracts. All of it is sample data, and step 2 shows it in full.
* **All of it in the agent's instructions.** Nothing is stored in files, so every chat has the data, including one your coding agent starts through Orca's MCP server, where nothing can be attached. To use your own pricing, you edit the instructions: see [make it yours](#make-it-yours).
* **Every figure with its working.** Without a sandbox, Margin Check works out each figure step by step in a table, with the formula and the numbers in it, so you can check every one. Given a sandbox with `--sandbox`, it computes them with Python. Language models can slip on arithmetic, so read the working before you rely on a figure, or use `--sandbox` for the ones that matter.
* **Today's date only when you give it.** For a question like "which contracts end in the next 60 days", put today's date in the question. Without a sandbox to read the clock, Margin Check asks for the date rather than guess it.

## What you'll do

1. [Install the CLI and sign in](#1-install-the-cli-and-sign-in).
2. [Copy Margin Check](#2-copy-margin-check) with one command, or build it from code.
3. [Use it](#3-use-it): ask about a deal, then make it yours.
4. [Let your coding agent drive](#4-let-your-coding-agent-drive).
5. [Run it from your own code](#5-run-it-from-your-own-code).
6. [See what it cost, and clean up](#6-see-what-it-cost-and-clean-up).

You need a terminal on macOS or Linux. Python or Node is only needed to build Margin Check from code (step 2) and in step 5. Margin Check needs no sandbox, so it uses no machine time: you pay only for its model tokens, from your credit.

## Or hand this page to your coding agent

If you work in Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor, it can do the typing while you watch. Paste this prompt:

```text theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
Set me up with Margin Check, a pricing agent on Orca (orcapods.ai), a platform that runs AI agents in the cloud. Follow https://docs.orcapods.ai/kits/margin-check with me, and run its commands yourself.
1. Install the Orca CLI with `curl -fsSL https://orcapods.ai/install.sh | sh` and check it with `orca --version`.
2. Sign me in with `orca login`. It prints a one-time code and a link: show me both, wait while I approve, then tell me my balance from `orca billing wallet`.
3. Copy Margin Check with `orca kits copy https://app.orcapods.ai/kits/kit-zK1zXb56TXYRZO94G --yes`, and check it's there with `orca agents get margin-check`.
4. Run `orca chat margin-check "Brightline wants to renew at 100 Team seats for 24 months at 25 percent off. What does that do to margin, and who approves it?"` and show me the answer.
5. Give yourself Orca's tools, so that from now on I can ask you to run Margin Check: add Orca's MCP server with the command for you in step 4 of that page, and tell me if you need a restart to load it.
Never print or paste my API keys.
```

The commands below work in bash, zsh, and fish, on macOS and Linux. Where the shells differ, a block has a tab for each.

## 1. Install the CLI and sign in

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
curl -fsSL https://orcapods.ai/install.sh | sh
orca --version
```

The script installs a single `orca` binary to `~/.local/bin`. If your shell then says `orca: command not found`, add that folder to your `PATH` as the script suggests, and open a new terminal. On Windows, download the binary from the [releases page](https://github.com/okikorg/orca-cli/releases). An older CLI updates itself with `orca update`.

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
orca login
```

It prints a one-time code and a link to the Orca dashboard. Open the link, sign in, check that the code matches, and choose **Approve**. The CLI then prints "Logged in to Orca as" your role and organization. It works the same over SSH and inside a coding agent, which relays the code and the link to you.

Check your credit:

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
orca billing wallet
```

`balance` is your Orca credit. The amount new accounts start with is on the [pricing page](https://orcapods.ai/pricing).

## 2. Copy Margin Check

Margin Check is a model, a reasoning effort, and its instructions, which hold the whole sample company: prices, costs, rules and contracts, then how to compute and how to answer. It lists no tools. This is all of it:

          "HOW TO WORK\n"
          "1. Read the deal: customer, plan, seats, term, discount, free months, add-ons and payment terms. For "
          "a renewal, anything the user does not change stays as in the current contract: say which terms you "
          "kept. If a figure you need is still missing, ask for it and stop.\n"
          "2. Arithmetic. If you have a tool that runs commands (a session with a sandbox), write one Python "
          "script that computes every figure in your answer, the counter-offers and their margins included, run "
          "it, and copy every number from its output. If you have no such tool, never do a sum in your head: "
          "write each figure as a row of the working table below, with its formula and the numbers in it, and "
          "work it out step by step, so a reader can check every number.\n"
          "3. Dates. When the answer depends on today's date, such as contracts ending in the next 60 days, use "
          "the date the user gives. If they give none and you can run commands, run `date +%Y-%m-%d`. Otherwise "
          "ask for today's date and stop; never assume one. The next N days run from today to today plus N "
          "days: today is day 0, not day 1, so the next 30 days from 2026-01-10 run to 2026-02-09 (21 days to "
          "the end of January, then 9 in February). Count the days month by month, show the count, and list "
          "every contract whose end date falls in that window.\n"
          "\n"
          "HOW TO ANSWER A DEAL\n"
          "Work out every rule before you write anything. Line 1, the verdict, repeats the approver from the R8 "
          "line below: \"Allowed, with <approver> approval.\" A deal that needs the CFO, VP Sales or a sales "
          "manager is allowed, with their approval. Only two things make a deal not allowed: a margin below 70% "
          "(R3) and seats outside the plan's limits (R5); then line 1 is \"Not allowed:\" and the reason, with "
          "its rule.\n"
          "Then the working table, three columns: item, working, amount in USD. One row each, in this order: "
          "subscription per year; each add-on per year; premium support per year, if any; revenue per year; "
          "hosting per year; each add-on's cost per year; support per year; processing per year (3% of revenue "
          "per year); cost per year; then, if the term is not 12 months or there is onboarding, revenue over "
          "the term and cost over the term, with onboarding and its processing and cost added once; then gross "
          "margin; total discount; commit allowance; effective discount. Round money to the cent and "
          "percentages to the nearest tenth (76.66% is 76.7%), and only at the end.\n"
          "Then \"Rules:\", one short line per rule that applies, by number, each with the level it requires. End "
          "with R8: list every level those lines require, then name the highest, in the order rep, sales "
          "manager, VP Sales, CFO, as the approver.\n"
          "Then \"Counter-offer:\": the largest total discount the rep could approve alone, and the largest a "
          "sales manager could, each with its gross margin. Find each level's in three steps, and write that "
          "working first:\n"
          "a. The rule limit: the smallest total discount allowed by R1 with the commit allowance (10% plus the "
          "allowance for the rep, 20% plus the allowance for a sales manager) and, for a renewal, by R7 (the "
          "current contract's discount plus 5 points). R5 and R6 must pass too: if they cannot at this level, "
          "for example net 60 terms for the rep, say no discount works at this level.\n"
          "b. The gross margin at that discount, in its own working rows like the deal's: revenue over the "
          "term, cost over the term, gross margin. If it is 75% or more, that discount is the counter-offer.\n"
          "c. Only if it is under 75%: the largest discount with a margin of 75% or more is 1 - F, where F = (K "
          "- 0.22 x O) / (0.22 x A - s x S), and over the term: A is the revenue from subscription, add-ons and "
          "premium support at no discount; S is the subscription revenue at no discount; K is hosting, SSO and "
          "audit log costs, and the onboarding cost; O is the onboarding revenue (3,000 or 0); s is 0.04, or "
          "0.09 with premium support. Check A first: the deal's revenue over the term, less any onboarding, "
          "divided by (1 - its total discount), must equal A; if not, find the mistake. Round 1 - F down to one "
          "decimal place, then work out the margin at that discount as in step b: it must come out at 75.0% or "
          "just over. If it does not, your division is wrong: do it again.\n"
          "Then end with two lines, one for the rep and one for a sales manager, each copying its discount and "
          "margin from the working above. Never state a margin without its working.\n"
          "\n"
          "For a question that is not a single deal, such as which contracts end soon, answer briefly with a "
          "short table and the working behind it.\n"
          "\n"
          "Write plain text and keep it short: no headings and no bold; tables as simple pipe tables. Write "
          "ranges as \"1 to 10\", and never use em or en dashes."

      'HOW TO WORK\n' +
      '1. Read the deal: customer, plan, seats, term, discount, free months, add-ons and payment terms. For ' +
      'a renewal, anything the user does not change stays as in the current contract: say which terms you ' +
      'kept. If a figure you need is still missing, ask for it and stop.\n' +
      '2. Arithmetic. If you have a tool that runs commands (a session with a sandbox), write one Python ' +
      'script that computes every figure in your answer, the counter-offers and their margins included, run ' +
      'it, and copy every number from its output. If you have no such tool, never do a sum in your head: ' +
      'write each figure as a row of the working table below, with its formula and the numbers in it, and ' +
      'work it out step by step, so a reader can check every number.\n' +
      '3. Dates. When the answer depends on today\'s date, such as contracts ending in the next 60 days, use ' +
      'the date the user gives. If they give none and you can run commands, run `date +%Y-%m-%d`. Otherwise ' +
      'ask for today\'s date and stop; never assume one. The next N days run from today to today plus N ' +
      'days: today is day 0, not day 1, so the next 30 days from 2026-01-10 run to 2026-02-09 (21 days to ' +
      'the end of January, then 9 in February). Count the days month by month, show the count, and list ' +
      'every contract whose end date falls in that window.\n' +

      'HOW TO ANSWER A DEAL\n' +
      'Work out every rule before you write anything. Line 1, the verdict, repeats the approver from the R8 ' +
      'line below: "Allowed, with <approver> approval." A deal that needs the CFO, VP Sales or a sales ' +
      'manager is allowed, with their approval. Only two things make a deal not allowed: a margin below 70% ' +
      '(R3) and seats outside the plan\'s limits (R5); then line 1 is "Not allowed:" and the reason, with ' +
      'its rule.\n' +
      'Then the working table, three columns: item, working, amount in USD. One row each, in this order: ' +
      'subscription per year; each add-on per year; premium support per year, if any; revenue per year; ' +
      'hosting per year; each add-on\'s cost per year; support per year; processing per year (3% of revenue ' +
      'per year); cost per year; then, if the term is not 12 months or there is onboarding, revenue over ' +
      'the term and cost over the term, with onboarding and its processing and cost added once; then gross ' +
      'margin; total discount; commit allowance; effective discount. Round money to the cent and ' +
      'percentages to the nearest tenth (76.66% is 76.7%), and only at the end.\n' +
      'Then "Rules:", one short line per rule that applies, by number, each with the level it requires. End ' +
      'with R8: list every level those lines require, then name the highest, in the order rep, sales ' +
      'manager, VP Sales, CFO, as the approver.\n' +
      'Then "Counter-offer:": the largest total discount the rep could approve alone, and the largest a ' +
      'sales manager could, each with its gross margin. Find each level\'s in three steps, and write that ' +
      'working first:\n' +
      'a. The rule limit: the smallest total discount allowed by R1 with the commit allowance (10% plus the ' +
      'allowance for the rep, 20% plus the allowance for a sales manager) and, for a renewal, by R7 (the ' +
      'current contract\'s discount plus 5 points). R5 and R6 must pass too: if they cannot at this level, ' +
      'for example net 60 terms for the rep, say no discount works at this level.\n' +
      'b. The gross margin at that discount, in its own working rows like the deal\'s: revenue over the ' +
      'term, cost over the term, gross margin. If it is 75% or more, that discount is the counter-offer.\n' +
      'c. Only if it is under 75%: the largest discount with a margin of 75% or more is 1 - F, where F = (K ' +
      '- 0.22 x O) / (0.22 x A - s x S), and over the term: A is the revenue from subscription, add-ons and ' +
      'premium support at no discount; S is the subscription revenue at no discount; K is hosting, SSO and ' +
      'audit log costs, and the onboarding cost; O is the onboarding revenue (3,000 or 0); s is 0.04, or ' +
      '0.09 with premium support. Check A first: the deal\'s revenue over the term, less any onboarding, ' +
      'divided by (1 - its total discount), must equal A; if not, find the mistake. Round 1 - F down to one ' +
      'decimal place, then work out the margin at that discount as in step b: it must come out at 75.0% or ' +
      'just over. If it does not, your division is wrong: do it again.\n' +
      'Then end with two lines, one for the rep and one for a sales manager, each copying its discount and ' +
      'margin from the working above. Never state a margin without its working.\n' +
      '\n' +
      'For a question that is not a single deal, such as which contracts end soon, answer briefly with a ' +
      'short table and the working behind it.\n' +
      '\n' +
      'Write plain text and keep it short: no headings and no bold; tables as simple pipe tables. Write ' +
      'ranges as "1 to 10", and never use em or en dashes.',
  });
  console.log(marginCheck.id);

The instructions are the whole program: Orca runs each conversation and keeps every message, and the model follows the rules. `reasoning` gives the model room to work through every rule before it writes the verdict. The model name also says who pays: `orca/openrouter/<id>` runs on your Orca credit. See [models and provider keys](/providers).

## 3. Use it

Ask Margin Check about a deal:

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
orca chat margin-check "Brightline wants to renew at 100 Team seats for 24 months at 25 percent off. What does that do to margin, and who approves it?"
```

Brightline Logistics is one of the sample contracts: 80 Team seats at 15 percent off for 12 months, with SSO and the audit log. Margin Check keeps whatever the question doesn't change, works out the figures, and checks the deal against every rule. A real run on 2026-10-16 answered:

```text theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
Allowed, with CFO approval.
Renewal terms kept: SSO, Audit log, net 30, and no free months. Team supports 100 seats because it requires at least 10 seats and has no stated maximum under R5.
| item | working | amount in USD |
|---|---|---:|
| subscription per year | 100 x $45 x 12 x (1 - 25%) | $40,500.00 |
| SSO per year | 100 x $6 x 12 x (1 - 25%) | $5,400.00 |
| Audit log per year | 100 x $4 x 12 x (1 - 25%) | $3,600.00 |
| revenue per year | $40,500.00 + $5,400.00 + $3,600.00 | $49,500.00 |
| hosting per year | 100 x $6 x 12 | $7,200.00 |
| SSO cost per year | 100 x $1 x 12 | $1,200.00 |
| Audit log cost per year | 100 x $1.50 x 12 | $1,800.00 |
| support per year | 4% x $40,500.00 | $1,620.00 |
| processing per year | 3% x $49,500.00 | $1,485.00 |
| cost per year | $7,200.00 + $1,200.00 + $1,800.00 + $1,620.00 + $1,485.00 | $13,305.00 |
| revenue over term | $49,500.00 x 24 / 12 | $99,000.00 |
| cost over term | $13,305.00 x 24 / 12 | $26,610.00 |
| gross margin | ($99,000.00 - $26,610.00) / $99,000.00 | 73.1% |
| total discount | 25% + 0 points for free months | 25.0% |
| commit allowance | 24-month term | 5.0% |
| effective discount | 25.0% - 5.0% | 20.0% |
Rules:
- R1: Effective discount of 20.0% requires sales manager approval.
- R2: The 24-month term gives a 5.0-point commit allowance.
- R3: The 73.1% margin is between 70% and 75%, requiring CFO approval.
- R5: 100 Team seats is within the stated seat limits.
- R6: Net 30 is standard and requires no additional approval.
- R7: Renewal discount of 25.0% is more than 5 points above the current 15.0%, requiring at least VP Sales approval.
- R8: Required levels are sales manager, VP Sales, and CFO. Highest: CFO.
Counter-offer:
Rep:
a. R1 limit: 10% + 5% commit allowance = 15%. R7 limit: current 15% + 5% = 20%. Smallest limit: 15%.
b. At 15% discount:
- Revenue over term: $132,000.00 x (1 - 15%) = $112,200.00
- Cost over term: $20,400.00 + (4% x $108,000.00 x 85%) + (3% x $112,200.00) = $27,438.00
- Gross margin: ($112,200.00 - $27,438.00) / $112,200.00 = 75.5%
c. Since the margin is at least 75%, no further reduction is needed.
Sales manager:
a. R1 limit: 20% + 5% commit allowance = 25%. R7 limit: current 15% + 5% = 20%. Smallest limit: 20%.
b. At 20% discount:
- Revenue over term: $132,000.00 x (1 - 20%) = $105,600.00
- Cost over term: $20,400.00 + (4% x $108,000.00 x 80%) + (3% x $105,600.00) = $27,024.00
- Gross margin: ($105,600.00 - $27,024.00) / $105,600.00 = 74.4%
c. A = ($99,000.00 - $0.00) / (1 - 25%) = $132,000.00. S = $108,000.00. K = $20,400.00. O = $0.00. s = 0.04.
- F = ($20,400.00 - 0.22 x $0.00) / (0.22 x $132,000.00 - 0.04 x $108,000.00) = 82.5%
- Largest discount at 75% margin: 1 - F = 17.4%, rounded down to one decimal place.
- Revenue over term: $132,000.00 x (1 - 17.4%) = $109,032.00
- Cost over term: $20,400.00 + (4% x $108,000.00 x 82.6%) + (3% x $109,032.00) = $27,239.28
- Gross margin: ($109,032.00 - $27,239.28) / $109,032.00 = 75.0%
Rep counter-offer: 15.0% discount, 75.5% margin.
Sales manager counter-offer: 17.4% discount, 75.0% margin.
```

That answer cost less than a cent. It reads in four parts:

* **The verdict**, in the first line. Needing the CFO is not a refusal: a deal is not allowed only when its margin is under 70 percent (R3) or its seats are outside the plan's limits (R5).
* **The working table**, a row for each figure, with its formula and the numbers in it.
* **The rules** that decided it, by number. Here three apply, and R8 makes the highest of them the approver.
* **A counter-offer**: the largest discount the rep could approve alone, and the largest a sales manager could, each with its margin and how it was found.

Ask about the contracts, too. Give today's date with any question that depends on it:

```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
orca chat margin-check "Which contracts end in the next 60 days? Today is 2026-10-16."
```

```text theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
Window: 2026-10-16 through 2026-12-15.
| Customer | Contract end |
| --- | --- |
| Brightline Logistics | 2026-10-31 |
| Harbor & Finch | 2026-11-30 |
Working: October 16 to October 31 = 15 days, November = 30 days, December 1 to December 15 = 15 days. Total = 60 days.
```

To have a conversation, run `orca chat margin-check` with no question, then ask follow-ups such as "And at 20 percent off?" in the same session. Ctrl-C leaves the chat and prints `session session_...`; `orca chat margin-check --session session_...` picks it up again.

<Tip>
  For figures you'll act on, add `--sandbox`: Margin Check then writes a Python script for every figure, runs it, and copies the numbers from its output. A sandbox uses machine time, so delete the session when you're done with `orca sessions delete session_... --yes`. A real run with `--sandbox` on the question above used one minute of machine time.
</Tip>

### Make it yours

Everything Margin Check knows is in its instructions, so putting in your own pricing is an edit. Open it on the [Agents page](https://app.orcapods.ai/agents), choose **Edit agent**, and replace Larkspur's tables and rules with yours. Or edit `margin_check_agent.py`, delete the old agent with `orca agents delete margin-check --yes`, and run the file again.

* Keep the shape: the price list, the cost to serve, how to compute, the numbered rules, and the contracts. Answers cite rules by their numbers.
* Change "How to compute" with your pricing, such as how your add-ons are discounted.
* The counter-offer's formula uses 0.22, which is 1 minus the 75 percent margin floor of R3 minus the 3 percent payment processing. If you change either, change 0.22 to match.
* Anyone who can read the agent can read your pricing. If you publish your own version as a [kit](/kits), its instructions go with it.

## 4. Let your coding agent drive

Give your coding agent Orca's tools, and you can ask Margin Check without leaving your editor. `orca mcp serve` is an MCP server with one tool per CLI action, so your coding agent can copy kits, chat with agents, and read your usage and wallet. It uses the login you already have.

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Claude Code">
    Install the Orca plugin. It registers the MCP server and adds a skill that knows the CLI:

    ```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
    claude plugin marketplace add okikorg/orca-cli
    claude plugin install orca@orca
    ```

    Or add only the MCP server:

    ```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
    claude mcp add orca -- orca mcp serve
    ```
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Cursor">
    Add this to `~/.cursor/mcp.json`:

    ```json theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "orca": {
          "command": "orca",
          "args": ["mcp", "serve"]
        }
      }
    }
    ```
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Codex">
    ```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
    codex mcp add orca -- orca mcp serve
    ```
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

Start a new session of your coding agent so it loads the server. Its `chat` tool sends Margin Check a message and returns the reply, with nothing to attach, since the pricing is in Margin Check's instructions. Then ask it things like:

* "I'm changing the renewal logic in our quote builder. Ask Margin Check what renewing Brightline at 100 Team seats for 24 months at 25 percent off does to margin, and who approves it, and check our code picks the same approver."
* "Ask Margin Check the largest discount a sales manager could approve on a 36-month Enterprise deal for 200 seats with the audit log."
* "Ask Margin Check which contracts end in the next 60 days. Today is 2026-10-16."
* "How much Orca credit do I have left, and what did Margin Check cost today?"

Your coding agent acts as you with these tools: it can create, delete, and spend. See [use Orca from coding agents](/cli/mcp) for every tool.

## 5. Run it from your own code

Everything so far went through the CLI, which calls the same API your application will. Your code uses the official `openai` package with an Orca API key. If you built Margin Check from code in step 2 in this terminal, you already have both: skip to the program.

Install the `openai` package. It needs Python 3.10 or later, or Node 22.18 or later. Check your version first, and update it if it's older:

<CodeGroup>
  ```bash Python theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
  python3 --version    # 3.10 or later
  python3 -m venv .venv
  .venv/bin/pip install openai==3.13.0
  ```

  ```bash TypeScript theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
  node --version       # 22.18 or later
  npm init -y && npm pkg set type=module
  npm install openai@7.15.0
  ```
</CodeGroup>

Then make a key, in the terminal you'll run the program from. This keeps it there as `ORCA_API_KEY` without printing it. A new terminal won't have it, so run this again there.

<CodeGroup>
  ```bash bash / zsh theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
  export ORCA_API_KEY=$(orca keys create margin-check </dev/null)
  ```

  ```fish fish theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
  set -x ORCA_API_KEY (orca keys create margin-check </dev/null)
  ```
</CodeGroup>

This program finds Margin Check, opens a session with no sandbox, streams the answer to the question you give it, and deletes the session:

<CodeGroup>
  ```python margin_check.py theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
  import os
  import sys
  from openai import OpenAI
  client = OpenAI(api_key=os.environ["ORCA_API_KEY"], base_url="https://api.orcapods.ai/v1")
  agents = client.beta.agents
  margin_check = next(agent for agent in agents.list() if agent.name == "margin-check")
  session = agents.sessions.create(agent_id=margin_check.id, environment={"type": "none"})
  try:
      with agents.sessions.stream(session.id, input=sys.argv[1]) as stream:
          for event in stream:
              if event.type == "agent.session.turn.output_text.delta":
                  print(event.delta, end="", flush=True)
              elif event.type in ("agent.session.turn.failed", "agent.session.turn.cancelled"):
                  print("\nThe turn ended:", event.type)
      print()
  finally:
      agents.sessions.delete(session.id)
  ```

  ```typescript margin_check.ts theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
  import OpenAI from 'openai';
  const client = new OpenAI({ apiKey: process.env.ORCA_API_KEY, baseURL: 'https://api.orcapods.ai/v1' });
  const agents = client.beta.agents;
  let marginCheck;
  for await (const agent of agents.list()) if (agent.name === 'margin-check') { marginCheck = agent; break; }
  if (!marginCheck) throw new Error('No agent called margin-check. Copy it first (step 2).');
  const session = await agents.sessions.create({ agent_id: marginCheck.id, environment: { type: 'none' } });
</CodeGroup>
A real run of the Python program printed:
```text theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
Allowed, with sales manager approval.

Renewal terms kept: Team, 12 seats, 12 months, and no add-ons. Changed from 5% to 10% discount and from net 30 to net 60.

| item | working | amount in USD |
|---|---|---:|
| subscription per year | 12 × $45 × 12 × (1 - 10%) | $5,832.00 |
| revenue per year | subscription revenue | $5,832.00 |
| hosting per year | 12 × $6 × 12 | $864.00 |
| support per year | 4% × $5,832.00 | $233.28 |
| processing per year | 3% × $5,832.00 | $174.96 |
| cost per year | $864.00 + $233.28 + $174.96 | $1,272.24 |
| gross margin | ($5,832.00 - $1,272.24) / $5,832.00 | 78.2% |
| total discount | 10% + 0 free-month points | 10.0% |
| commit allowance | 12-month term | 0.0% |
| effective discount | 10.0% - 0.0% | 10.0% |

Rules:
R1: Effective discount is 10.0%, within the rep limit; rep approval.
R2: A 12-month term gives no commit allowance; no additional approval.
R3: Gross margin is 78.2%, so R1 decides; rep approval.
R5: Team requires at least 10 seats; 12 seats passes; no additional approval.
R6: Net 60 requires sales manager approval.
R7: Renewal discount is exactly 5 points above the current 5% discount, so no VP Sales requirement.
R8: Required levels are rep and sales manager; highest is sales manager.

Counter-offer:

Rep:
a. R1 limit: 10% + 0% allowance = 10%. R7 limit: current 5% + 5 points = 10%. However, net 60 cannot be approved by the rep under R6.
b. No rep-approved discount works at net 60.
c. Not applicable because R6 blocks the deal at rep level.

Sales manager:
a. R1 limit: 20% + 0% allowance = 20%. R7 limit: 5% + 5 points = 10%. Smallest limit: 10%. Net 60 passes at this level.
b. Revenue over the term: 12 × $45 × 12 × (1 - 10%) = $5,832.00.
Cost over the term: $864.00 + $233.28 + $174.96 = $1,272.24.
Gross margin: ($5,832.00 - $1,272.24) / $5,832.00 = 78.2%.
c. Not needed because the margin is at least 75%.

Rep: no valid counter-offer at net 60; margin not applicable.
Sales manager: 10.0% discount at 78.2% gross margin.
```
Net 60 needs a sales manager (R6), so the rep has no counter-offer at those terms. Margin Check lives on Orca, so your code only asks the question and reads the answer. [Build with the API](/build-with-the-api) explains each call.
## 6. See what it cost, and clean up
Every call is recorded with what it cost, down to the session:
```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
orca usage --days 1 # today's usage, by the hour
orca billing wallet # your balance and plan
```
`orca sessions get session_...` shows one session's cost, tokens, and machine time.
* **Model tokens** are paid from your Orca credit, since Margin Check's model starts with `orca/`. Each answer on this page cost less than a cent.
* **Margin Check uses no machine time**, unless you give it a sandbox with `--sandbox`. Sandboxes use [machine time](/plans#machine-time) from your plan and need a small balance of credit, your plan's [minimum balance](/plans#paid-work-needs-a-minimum-balance).
The numbers for each plan are on the [pricing page](https://orcapods.ai/pricing). See [usage and wallet](/wallet#read-the-wallet-and-your-usage) for the rest.
Keep Margin Check if you like it. To remove everything this page made instead, delete Margin Check's sessions, then Margin Check, then the key. Deleting an agent does not delete its sessions.
```bash theme={"theme":{"light":"vitesse-light","dark":"vitesse-black"}}
orca sessions list --agent margin-check --all | cut -f1 | xargs -I{} orca sessions delete {} --yes
orca agents delete margin-check --yes
orca keys list
```
Then revoke the key named `margin-check` with `orca keys revoke <its id> --yes`, and close the terminal: its `ORCA_API_KEY` still holds the revoked key.
